I first attended Auburn University where I obtained a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance. I went on to pursue a career in education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where I completed my Masters Degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. After teaching in Alexander City for six years, I went back to school to seek a certification in Gifted Education. This is my thirteenth year of teaching, but my seventh year with Auburn City Schools where I am serving as an Itinerant Venture Teacher.

Auburn City Schools (ACS) believes all children have academic and creative talents, therefore we strive to enhance student’s learning through special events such as field trips, assembly programs, speakers, fine arts/cultural arts programs and in every class students are encouraged to do more challenging work. All third, fourth and fifth graders are served in the Venture Enrichment Program.

The Alabama Department of Education defines gifted children and youth as those who perform at high levels in academic and creative fields when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. These children and youth require additional services not ordinarily provided through the regular school program. Students possessing these abilities can be found in all populations, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor. Second grade students in Auburn City Schools are screened to determine those who perform at this high level. Additionally, the top 10% of identified students according to the screening criteria in third, fourth and fifth grade are served in the Venture Enrichment Small Group Program.
Any individual may refer a student to be considered for an evaluation to determine if the student qualified according to the ACS guidelines. Referral to the Venture program can be made by contacting the Venture teacher or principal at each elementary school, or the special education coordinator for Auburn City Schools. Characteristics, high level abilities, and performance indicators are evaluated yearly to determine eligibility by the School Screening Team.
