We are working through  our STC kit about Microworlds. We will spend the entire month of September learning about the microscopic world. This week the students have been introduced to microscopes and how to care for these special scientific instruments. We have read non fiction passages about this invention as well. The students will learn to prepare wet-mount slides and use dry well slides. We will have the opportunity to view unique microscopic organisms as well as learn the major parts of plant and animal cells. The students will develop their observation skills and will become more adept at descriptive details as they document experiments  in their science notebooks.
Notebooks: Please remember that a large part of your child’s grade is determined on the quality of the work they put into the science notebook. Often they will be asked to discuss our latest experiment with you for homework. Your signature and comment verifies that they did their homework!  We will have a test at the end of the unit.  Please be on the look out for this information in future weeks.

We are ending Chapter 1.  Our chapter test will be on Tuesday, October 11.  As we begin Chapter 2, we will focus on multiplying whole numbers and decimals. Please continue to review the basic facts with your child.  This is very important to their success in Math. Every Monday your child will receive a DAILY MATH sheet.  This assignment is to be completed and turned in on Friday. The problems will consist of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems.  Frequent and focused practice leads to mastery and retention of the skills practiced. Our goal for Math this year will be to engage students in making sense of mathematics through "inquiry-based" teaching methods.  Research shows that students learn better when they figure things out for themselves. Particularly, when they are given "real world" problems to which they can relate.  As a parent, you can help by setting high standards for your child in math.  By pointing out that math is a part of everyday life and reinforcing the concept that many jobs require math and problem solving, you will encourage your child to understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
We are pleased to welcome Ms. Tammy Kennedy, a lab student from Auburn University.

Text Box: Language Arts:        Mrs. Bennett: jbennett@auburnschools.org
In Language Arts class we have started learning about the Traits of Effective Writing.  Your child will learn about ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation this year.  We will have lessons in each area. We have started with Ideas.  Your child has a new Writing Log with notes from class.  This log is very important.  It will serve as a study guide for tests and a guide to help improve writing all year.  On Sept. 13 a published piece in writing is due.  This piece is entitled “Uncle Anthony”.  Instruction will be given in class for this writing project and all assignments.  Paying attention in class is critically important to understand all assignments.  Language class involves listening, speaking, reading, and writing!  Most writing is started in class.  Almost all writing will also be worked on at home.  Writing takes time.  Please encourage your child to work through the process.  Revision on rough drafts is writing.  Test on Ideas is Sept. 14.
Thank you for helping your child become a better writer!  Mrs. Bennett!

Text Box: Reading:
We just finished our first chapter books in Reading Class. We will have our first chapter book test this Friday, September 7th. Please look for a new chapter book to be coming home next week. Mrs. Bennett’s class will be reading Whose Side Are You On?, Ms. Edmundson’s class will be reading Me, Mop, and the Moondance Kid, and Mrs. Jones’ class will be reading From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.  Along with these chapter books, a Reading Log should be coming home with students every night. Be sure that your child is reading twenty minutes each evening. Every student will be getting a Reading Record Sheet. This is to document their twenty minutes of reading each night. Please be aware of the Reading Record (time log) that needs to be signed on a daily basis. I will collect these at the end of the month. Each night that is signed is worth 5 points.

Social Studies:
Reading and Social Studies have gotten off to a great start. In Social Studies we just started chapter 2, learning about the Native Americans in North America. The tentative test date for chapter 2 is September 13th.  We will then finish the month of September learning about life in the Eastern Hemisphere and about how the explorers looked for the shorter routes to Europe. To help study for their Social Studies tests, they will need to be looking over their notes that are taken in class, as well as the worksheets that go home for daily homework.

We will study Life in the East and West during the month of September. This unit will cover Chapters 1, 2 and 3 Test will be announced in advance and notices will be sent via assignment pad or Wednesday folder.  We are using our Daily Geography exercise in class to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of physical and political aspect of the world.  Daily Geography encourages students to use maps to locate features such as landforms and water bodies, natural and political boundaries and capitals.  The program also leads students to think about other topics such as places and regions, environment and society and the uses of geography.  If you have specific questions, please contact
Mrs. Grimmett.

Text Box: Reading
In Reading we are using a variety of tools:  our Reading textbook for stories and poems as well as informational articles, our Social Studies book to read in the content area, leveled readers and chapter books for group and independent work. This week we are reading a basal selection in class “Faith and Eddie” and will choose a chapter book from a selection of three on Thursday to read during the month of September.  Your child will receive an activity booklet for his or her chapter book.  Please look for it to come home next week to complete work not finished in class.

Please be reminded that your child received a two week Daily Reading Log for September 4-14 to document reading for twenty minutes outside of school.  This activity is worth five homework points per day and a total of fifty points at the close of each two week period.
