Dear Parents,

We are ready to begin another exciting year in Algebra.  I am planning to have a parent meeting on Monday, August 25.  This meeting will be held to discuss the Algebra curriculum and options for high school.  We will also talk about the PSAT-NMSQT.

I wanted to let everyone know about some of the procedures for the class.  Some of these procedures are policies designated by Auburn City Schools, and I cannot change them.

I will begin by talking about the grading policy.  All tests count 75 percent of the grade.  Homework and class work count for 20 percent of the grade.  Quizzes count the remaining 5 percent of the grade.  We will have 3 or 4 quizzes during each nine weeks.  We will also have 4 or 5 tests during each nine weeks.  We will have homework most days, although it may be possible that students finish their work while at school.  Homework is graded by completion.  We will always go over the assignment the next day to insure that students understand what is being done.

Students in the Algebra class have the opportunity to take the PSAT-NMSQT.  This is the test that high school juniors take to qualify for National Merit Scholarships.  This test will be given during school on October 15.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the students.  More information will be forthcoming.

I have told the students to have a three ring binder.  The purpose of the three ring binder for class is two fold.  I prefer loose leaf paper and it will hold the workbooks when they arrive.  Students may choose to have graph paper as well as lined paper.  This is optional, but may be very useful for some students.  This way, students will only have to bring one thing with them to class.  Books are to stay at home and are to be used as a reference and study guide.  Homework will almost always be given out of the workbook.

We have begun the year by getting to know each other.  I spent a couple of days with the students in team-building and class-building activities.  I feel it is necessary for me to get to know the students and for them to get to know each other.  Expect to start seeing your students with homework very soon.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at school.  The address is rcloud@auburnschools.org.  You can also call and set up an appointment with the front office if you desire to meet in person.  There will also be an open house/ PTA meeting soon.

Thanks,
