Prime Time

The first unit in our math class this year is Prime Time.  Its focus is whole numbers, and it teaches students about factors, multiples, divisors, products, prime numbers, composite numbers, common factors and multiples, and many other ideas about numbers.  This unit engages students in a series of activities that allow them to discover many of the key properties of numbers and to see how these properties apply to real life.

As part of the assessment for this unit, your child will be asked to do a project called "My Special Number."  The project is introduced at the beginning of the unit when each student is asked to choose a special number and write several things about it.  As students work through the unit, they apply what they are learning to write new information about their numbers.  At the end of the unit, students create projects which include everything they have learned about their numbers.

You can help your child in several ways:

• Have your child share their mathematics notebook with you, showing you what has been recorded about numbers.  Ask your child to explain why these are important.
• Have your child show you the boards for playing the Product and the Factor Games.  Have them explain the rules, then see who wins when the two of you compete.
