Bull- a “boy cow”

 Calf- a newborn bull or heifer.

Cow- an adult heifer that has given birth at least once
           …a “mommy cow”

Dam- the cow word for “mother”

Dry period - when a cow quits making milk two months       before she gives birth to a calf

Hay- round or square bales of dried grass that cows eat.    
Heifer- a “girl cow”…a female before she gives birth to her first calf

Lactating- describes a cow that is currently making milk

Milk- the white liquid cows make…up to 130 pounds a day for some cows!

Parlor- a barn where cows are milked

Pedigree- the “family tree” of a cow that goes back at least two generations

Silage - chopped corn or wheat that cows love to eat

Sire - the cow word for “father”
