As part of our ocean unit we are studying whales.
We have partnered with The Whale Center of New England (www.whalecenter.org/adptchce.htm)
to adopt a humpback whale. We raised money for this
special project by playing a great money counting game
called “Spare Change”. For two weeks the kids asked
their parents to empty their pockets or change cups so
they could try to count the change. If they correctly
counted the money…they could keep it. If they could not
count it correctly…their parents could keep it. On
“Count Up Day” (4/25/08) the kids tallied all of their
change to see if we reached our goal of $40.00. We
collected $42.29! As a class we discussed the
whales that were up for adoption and decided to adopt
Colt. He is a 27 year old humpback whale that is
often seen off the coast of New England. Since
April-November are prime whale watching months we hope
to be able to post info on Colt sightings soon.
