Building Vocabulary
Vocabulary
refers to the words we must know to communicate effectively. In
school we directly teach some word meanings. We also teach children
how to use context clues to figure out an unknown word. Students
also learn vocabulary indirectly when they talk to adults and listen
to adults read to them. This is true for children of all ages. You
can help develop your child’s vocabulary by reading aloud to
him/her. This may be a text that is more difficult but still of
interest to the child. Pause during reading to define unfamiliar
words. After reading, have a conversation about the book and relate
what was read to your child’s prior knowledge and experiences. The
more oral language experiences your child has, the more word
meanings they learn!

A
Note from the Teacher
Dear
Parents,
Thanks so much to all of you who remembered me during “Teacher
Appreciation Week.” I can’t begin to tell you how special you made
me feel. I especially loved the handmade cards that the children
gave to me!
Don’t forget to keep practicing the basic addition facts with your
child. Thanks!
Ms. Cook
