Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in Alabama during the last week of October.  Red Ribbon Week is a time set aside each year for boys, girls, and adults to learn more about how to avoid drug abuse.  We want our students to know that abusing drugs can take away relationships, dreams and goals, and good health.

What does research say about helping boys and girls stay away from dangerous drugs?

·        If they know the truth about what drugs can do to their bodies that will help them say “no.”  They need to get correct information.

·        If they know how to handle negative emotions appropriately that keeps them from turning to drugs to help ease the pain of bad feelings.

·        If they know how to handle peer pressure that helps them steer away from situations that involve drug use.

·        If they have good self-esteem that will keep them from participating in things that are harmful.

The Dean Road faculty and staff, as well as Officer Horne from the Auburn Police Department D.A.R.E. Program, work hard to help students get correct information about drugs, learn to manage emotions appropriately, deal with peer pressure effectively, and build positive self-esteem.

What else does research tell us that will help children make good choices about drugs?

If children have something that they really “put their heart into” – a sport, art, music, reading, writing, playing board games, etc. – that can help them stay away from dangerous drugs!

Does your child have an activity that they’re “hooked on?”  Is this a healthy activity that keeps them busy and away from harmful things like drugs?  Does this activity help them “work off” angry feelings or “lift their spirits” when they’re sad?  Does this activity build self-esteem?

A recent theme for Red Ribbon Week was:

“I’m Hooked On ________”

We used the week to help boys and girls explore healthy activities that they can become involved with.  The Auburn University Gymnastics team, Auburn University Baseball team, AJHS Jazz Band, Lee County Jr. Miss, a local karate group, and many others came to DRES to perform and speak to our students about the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle.

Enjoy these photographs from our “I’m Hooked On_________” theme and stay tuned for next year’s RRW theme!
