Character Education

“To educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.”  These are the words of Theodore Roosevelt and we, at Dean Road School, believe them to be true!  It is because of this belief that Character Education is a priority in our school   The theme for our Character Education Program this year is

STAR STUDENTS

Each week, one character trait is featured at our school.  Teachers have the trait posted in the classroom and defined.  They spend at least ten minutes a day discussing, writing about, or reading about the trait.  Instruction is most often integrated into the language arts curriculum through the use of children’s literature.  Our principal reminds us of the trait often during morning announcement time.  She features poems, quotes, etc.  Often school-wide activities are held to coordinate with the trait.  Some examples of these activities would be a mock-election for Patriotism, a food drive for Generosity, and a field day for Sportsmanship.

Teachers may spotlight students who demonstrate the character trait of the week in some exemplary way and these students become our "Stars" of Good Character.  From these students, a committee meets monthly and forwards a nomination or two to the county-wide Character In Action Program headed by Judge Lane.  Several Dean Road students have been chosen as county-wide winners through the CIA Program.
