Dear Parents,

This year Cary Woods’ third, fourth, and fifth graders will be participating in the WordMasters Challenge, a national competition using analogies. This challenge helps students to grow in their vocabulary and verbal reasoning, as they learn to think logically, analytically, and metaphorically, while solving word analogies.

Three times during the school year (fall, winter, and spring), the students will receive a word list of 25 new vocabulary words from the WordMasters’ Blue Division.  After studying these words for several weeks, the students will be given a written challenge of 20 analogies using the new vocabulary words. The fall challenge will use words from the fall word list, the winter challenge will use words from the winter and fall word lists, and the spring challenge will use words from all three word lists. The papers will be scored according to how many of the analogies were answered correctly, such as 10 out of 20, 15 out of 20, etc. Our scores will be sent to WordMasters, and they will let us know how Cary Woods ranked with other schools in the country. At the end of the year, each student’s scores will be totaled to give him or her a final score. The top ten final scores in each grade will receive a certificate from WordMasters, and the top final score in each grade with receive a medal. Any student who scores a perfect score, 20 out of 20, on any of the challenges will also receive a medal at the end of the year.

Each grade level has a separate word list. Please help your children to use these words in their daily activities. Many of these words will be used on standardized tests in the future.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or call me. I will be putting more information about WordMasters on the Venture page of the Cary Woods web page, along with links for practicing analogies.

Thank you for your help and have fun solving  analogies.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Webb
