Classroom Scrapbook 2006-07
Dear Students,
Thank you for making this such a wonderful year! I hope you've learned a lot about our nation's history, about writing a great essay, and about yourselves as readers. I also hope you've learned about friendships, teamwork, and responsibilities. I have enjoyed meeting and teaching each and every one of you. You have been fun to teach and I, too, have learned a lot! I hope to take what we've tried this year and I hope next year's group shows me the same excitement and enthusiasm the boys did with social studies and the same attention to detail and planning that the girls showed. You have truly been a wonderful learning experience for me as a life-long learner and I hope I've sparked questions and wonders for you to continue on your journey as life-long learners. Best wishes for a wonderful sixth grade year!!

Our Trip to Port Columbus Naval Museum and Andersonville National Historic Park was very fun and we learned a lot!!

We celebrated Poetry Month in April by creating anthologies, writing our own poetry, participating in poetry readings and performances for parents and first grade buddies, and sidewalk publishing our favorites. Here we are enjoying the April weather and publishing our poems for the school to read and enjoy!!

What we have learned about the Star Spangled Banner by
Sorcha and Cassie:
It was fun and educating. The anthem was created by Francis Scott Key and the flag was created by Mary Pickersgill. The anthem was written on a ship in the harbor outside of Fort McHenry during a battle. He thought they were going to lose and when he woke up the next day, the flag was still there showing that America still held the fort. Today we recreated the Star Spangled Banner that inspired Key to write the poem. It was 30 feet by 42 feet with stars that are 2 feet across.

Extra Credit Lewis and Clark Projects
| Interview with Seaman by Sorcha | Interview with Captain Clark by Christopher | Interview with Seaman by Sarah |
Our intern, Mrs. Moore, has begun her full time teaching on the topic of Lewis and Clark and the Louisiana Purchase. These are the books we are reading in groups. Mrs. Strickland has been digitally recording our discussion groups so we can plan our discussions and hear evidence of our thinking related to our books. We are VERY excited to hear ourselves on the world wide web!! Come listen to what we have to say!!

We LOVE reading with our listening kits and are working hard on becoming great writers as well! Here we are enjoying our listening kits, writing one-pagers in our strategy journals, and peer editing our descriptive pieces.
