From the President’s Pen
Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed the Fall Festival as much as my family did! What a wonderful event for the City of Auburn! All the hard work paid off with a fantastic turnout! A special THANKS to the Fall Festival Committee for a job well done.
As we turn our calendars over to October, we see many more fun activities coming up at CWES. The Book Fair kick off is next Monday, Oct 8th -- always a wonderful time to get a jump on Holiday shopping! And, with the “one for books” program, you can give a little as $1 and do a lot to help those who are in need. You’ll find more information about the “one for books” program in this newsletter.
We’ll also kick off Red Ribbon Week this month on Oct 22nd at 1:15pm – with the AU Cheerleaders for a Pep Rally! Parents, you’re invited to join in the fun too -- bring your pom poms, wear yellow and blue, and come out for the Pep Rally!
Once again, please feel free to contact me if there is any way the PTA may be of help to you or your children at CWES, and thanks for all that each of you do to make Cary Woods a great place to be!
Sincerely, Steven Lonis-Shumate, sshumate@auburn.edu

You Can Make a Difference!
“One for Books”
Through this program, when you donate $1 with your paper book slip, the library is able to help children in our own school who are in need to enable them to purchase books, helping to encourage their love of reading! Scholastic will also match one book for every dollar we raise, and those books will be donated to our choice of three non-profit organizations that help children!!
Book Fair Needs Volunteers!
We still need volunteers to help work the Book Fair. Volunteers work one hour shifts during the hours of 8am – 2pm. If you volunteer, you get to choose a FREE book under $5 for your effort!! If you would like to help, please call Sabrina Van Ginkel at 887-9288 or email at sabrinavanginkel@netzero.com
Look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair!

From the Reading Corner
Thank you those of you who were able to join us for the ACS Jim Trelease presentation! Reading aloud to your child is the number one suggestion across the country for parents to help students with reading. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your time together:
& Get Comfortable- Find a special spot in your home and make it cozy with pillows or blankets. Enjoy reading outside when the weather is enjoyable. Serve up a drink or snack to your child before you start!
& Remove Distractions-Try to keep the time as quiet as possible so children can focus on the story. Turn off the TV and ignore those phone calls for these special 15-20 minutes!
& Encourage Participation-Let your child/children select the story, turn the pages, and discuss their connections to the text with you. Ask them to make predictions about what will happen next and share the meaning of words they may not know.
&
Enjoy
Yourself-Help motivate your child to read by expressing how much you enjoy
and treasure this special time with your child/children. Make it a family
affair!
Happy Reading!!

What’s an ITC?
It’s football season. And everyone knows a coach is necessary to score. A great coach motivates the team, coordinates offense and defense, and models the plays. At CWES, the Instructional Technology Coach (ITC) does the same for the integration of technology in the classroom. As our world becomes smaller, new skills are needed for our students to win the global game of life. Some of these skills involve the creative use of technology to share ideas, solve problems, and improve our world.
Teachers and their ITC will work together to develop a game plan to help all students develop the technology skills needed to win in the future. Sometimes teachers need a person who can guide them through some of the technology power plays. The ITC is that person. At other times, teachers need someone to show them different ways to use technology in their lessons. The ITC is the person who will run the play so the teacher can watch. So when your child comes home talking about the Tech Coach, you should get excited. Because your child would have just experienced one of the most important offensive plays in his or her life – preparing for a technology driven future!
“QMOT: DTRT!”
Translation: Quote Me on This: Do the Right Thing!
Our children are living in a different culture than most of their parents. They are growing up in a world with instant information at their finger tips. They’ve even developed their own shortcut language to keep up with the lightning quick speed of their world. Parents need to know how to keep their kids safe in the technology driven world. Do the right thing and join us for an evening of Cyber safety tips just for parents. We’ll meet Tuesday, November 13th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Reserve this date and be on the look out for more information.

CWES Instructional Technology Coach
