Underhand Throwing

 

30 min. lesson

A.E.E.C.

 

 

Equipment:      -  beanbags, hoops, playground balls, boxes, soccer balls.

 

Protocols:            -Line up time is quite time.

                        -When the teacher talks the students listen.

                        -When you hear the whistle you are to freeze.

                        -Stay in your own personal space.

                        -AEEC clap/chant and then silence.

 

 

Teacher Objectives:    -  To work with children on the skill of throwing.  To give

 feedback to help students understand the skill and promote an atmosphere for positive learning.

 

Student Objectives:    -  To listen to the teacher and practice the skills put forth. 

To work with others and to help friends that need assistance.

 

 

Instant Activity:   -   Dribble, Stop,  Switch

(5-7 min.)                   Students come in and sit against the wall.  Teacher gives

 directions quickly for activity. 

-Boys will hand dribble a red playground ball and Girls will foot dribble a soccer ball.  When teacher says “go,” everyone begins.  When teacher says, “stop”, everyone stops.  Then the teacher says, “switch.” The boys and girls exchange balls and wait for the teacher to says, “go.”

 

 

Lesson Focus:            Throwing

                        A) Review cues for over hand throwing and demonstrate. 

                                    1)Ball Back-Point-Step-&Throw.

B) Make sure the children repeat the cues and mimic the motions

2-3 times.

                        C) Tell the students to continue to practice throwing yarnballs for 2

 minutes.

                        D) Teacher will walk around and observer, giving feedback.

                        E) Tell students to put equipment away and sit back down in front

of the teacher.

                        F) Relate overhand throwing to underhand throwing.

                                    -ball back (behind knee), point, step, and throw.

                        G) Boys practice tossing underhanded into boxes with beanbags,

while girls practice tossing into hoops with beanbags.

                        H) Practice for 2 minutes or so, then have them switch.  Let them

practice at each station twice then put the equipment away.

                        -Sit students down

                        -Ask them about underhanded and over-handed throwing and the

 differences.

                        -Teacher may pose and let the students name the position the

teacher is in.

                        -Line up and dismiss.
