Chase, Flee, and Dodge

Instant Activity:            Indian Run-

(5-7 min.)                                Tell the story of the how little Indian boys, long ago, use to take a journey to show their parents their bravery.  The Indian boys run long distances through the woods, all day and night to show their strength.  As they took this run each child would take turns leading the group.  As one got tired the next would run to the front and lead the way.  Then another would run in front of him. (demonstrate with a few children quickly.)  Have the class break into 2 or 4 groups and try the Indian run.  Give everyone a chance to lead.

Lesson Focus:            Chasing, Fleeing, and Dodging-

-Have two tape lines down across middle of floor.  Good to have students sit on line and face teacher for instruction.

-Mention about Chase and Flee.

Chase = to try and catch

            Flee = to run from

-First lets play a partner game called “Come and Go.”

-Here we line up facing a partner holding both hands, (one on each tape line.)

-Then we drop hands and listen to teacher.

-When the teacher says “Flee,” we run away.

-When teacher says, “Chase,” we run to our friend and hold hands.

-Do several times, use tape lines to keep partners on their side when chasing.

-Our next game is “Partner Chase.

-Go over definition of chase and flee again.

-Chase- means running after to catch.

-Flee- means to run away from.

-Demonstrate with a child how we partner up and one chases while the other flees.  Then we switch.  The teacher will give the fleers a head start and then chasers will try and tag them.  If you are tagged you freeze and chaser freezes behind them.

-Lastly we are doing group dodging.

                                    -Give definition of dodging-

-Dodge- it means moving out of the way.

-Tell children how half get on one side and half get on the other.  We are going to run to the other side but, we are going to dodge the others as they run to our side.  Remember to use your eyes to see and dodge others.  Walk, skip, and run and dodge.
