In order to assure I am producing physically educated persons, I abide by certain guidelines. There are standards set by state and national committees that outline all the areas we should be covering. The 9 NASPE standards are some of the goals set by a national committee and strive toward. If you look at the standards you will see how important they are and why I strive to meet them.
The concepts and skills of our curriculum are designed to with three basic things in mind. One, to introduce and refine basic skills. Two, to try and provide a learning environment that is developmentally appropriate (appropriate for age, ability level, and other needs that any and every child may have.) Finally, it is developed to have a specific scope and sequence. A quality program has a well mapped course of study. Certain skills are fundamental for moving and controlling the body. Having a well thought out scope and sequence, utilizes the idea of building upon what we already know by establishing and revisiting skills. We integrate multiple skills as they build upon one another.
The skills we focus on are broken down into locomotor, non-manipulative, manipulative skills. We also focus on health and fitness, movement concepts, and social interactions. Working with in the standards set before me, I have tried to implemented developmentally appropriate practices of teaching. I attempt teach to the students’ abilities. We make tasks and activities adjustable to individuals needs. In turn the students are challenged, yet able to experience success during practice. I believe when a student is comfortable and experiencing success, they will achieve so much more. The environment I try to establish focuses on positive interactions with peers and teachers. Thus, creating the comfort level where students are free to attempt new things without being afraid of failing. Tasks are assigned so that students can work at their own level. That way they are assured of success. When they are ready, they can move to a more difficult task. As well as developmentally appropriate activities, I use an appropriate sequence of learning experiences. Each day building on prior knowledge or at least introducing skills at suitable times. (for example, I would not introduce striking with bats before I introduced striking with body parts or punting before kicking a stationary ball.) |
