Sanders’ Scribbles

This week, we have worked very hard!  I am so proud of all that the children have accomplished.  They are really getting into the routine of things, learning how to make their own choices and are beginning to solve their problems.  Plus, I began assessing the children’s reading readiness skills with the DIBELS test.  This test is mandated by the state and will be given 3 times throughout the year.  I will use the results from this assessment to further individualize the instruction your child receives.

SHARED JOURNAL

We are still building up to writing daily in our journals.  This week, we began dating our journal paper.   Dating our journal entries will provide us with a daily record of our Kindergarten year.  In addition, this will also help the children build a sense of time and knowledge of the days of the weeks and months of the year.   We have also worked on the sharing and questioning process.  The children have done a great job listening to the stories being shared and asking questions that will help them gather more information.  Next week, we will begin adding titles to our stories and using writing to tell about what was shared.

 THEME

We continued to web the rules that the children think are important for us to have in our classroom.  As situations arise, we will continue to add to our web.  Next week, we will be writing and signing our official classroom rules.

 SHARED READING

This week, we have read stories that are all about me.  With these stories, we worked on listening for sounds in words, counting the number of words they hear in the titles and listening for rhyming words.  We learned many chants that helped us learn the names of our classmates.  In addition to this, we read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and made a graph of the number of letters in our names.

 Centers

While at centers, the children were introduced to the Job Center.  This center is reserved for working with me on a particular task.  We also opened Math Center.  At this center, the children can play with a variety of math manipulatives and games.
