Sanders’ Scribbles

We have had a great week. It has been a little different with Mrs. Sanders away, but things have gone on as usual. We did have a special visit from the Auburn University Raptor Center. They brought two falcons, a red tailed hawk, and of course a golden eagle. The eagle was Nova, the newest War Eagle who flies at the games. The children really enjoyed the visit.

SHARED JOURNAL

We are continuing share our stories and negotiate with our friends each day. The children are doing a wonderful job as they try to convince their friends to vote for the story they want to write. During negotiations, we discuss things about the stories such as the topic, how well the person sharing presented their story, whether we learned anything new, how many times that person had been written about, and   whether they told us a lot of good details.

When we are writing in our journals, the children are learning how to listen for the different sounds in the words and are really doing a great job! Please continue to encourage your child to write at home and to share their stories with you.

 THEME

We are still working on our train web, we have added information about the different train cars, and about the train station. We have finished learning about the different parts of the train (the wheels, the control stand, the whistles, and the outside). We are also going to start learning about the train station jobs and the jobs on the train so that our friends can sign up for which job they want to have for our trip.

SHARED READING

We started an alphabet theme this week. Our main focus has been associating the proper sounds with their letters. The children are doing a great job with the activities. We are using the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom as our main book, but also reading Audrey Wood’s alphabet books. Mrs. Sanders and I made a new game on the smart board for the children to play where they can sort the letter (upper & lower case) by moving them up the coconut tree.

Center Time

We have really been concentrating on building our train. We are almost finished; all that is left is building the wheels and finishing the outside. We will also start building our suitcases and our cameras for the train trip.

The children also worked on making a pattern on their October calendars for their Math Journal and on playing some smart board assessment games.

We also opened a new center this week, Listening Center. Here the children can choose a book and listen to it being read to them on a cd. This will help the children learn and practice following the words from left to right and with other reading skills.
