Sanders’
Scribbles

Wow! It seems like it
has been forever since my last newsletter.
We have had many things happening in our classroom this
week. First, we
welcomed Miss Pettey to our family.
She is our intern and will be with us until May.
Second, we got a new classroom pet, Willie the Hamster.
Third, Dr. Land paid our class a visit Tuesday morning to
watch us learn. Finally, Sarah celebrated her birthday on
Thursday!
Centers
This week, we have
done several things at center time.
While I was busy finishing the kindergarten checklist
with the children, they were busy doing projects and research in
the classroom. The
children have been watching Willie and keeping a log on their
observations as well as doing some good Hamster research.
They have used the Internet and looked at books to help
learn all about hamsters. We
are taking all of their “hamster facts” and putting them
together to make our own Hamster book.
Shared
Journal
I can’t say enough
about the children at Shared Journal.
I wish that all of you could come and hear them negotiate
which story to write about.
It always amazes me when the children convince others of
their point of view.
Theme
We have finished our
study of Alabama. While
we still may build DeSoto Caverns in our classroom, we have
finally decided to venture out and see the USA! So, this week, we began to talk about transportation and
traveling. We
discussed some possible destinations and decided that flying on
an airplane was the fastest and best way to travel.
Therefore, we will be spending the next few weeks,
researching airplanes and airports.
We will also be preparing for our trip by choosing our
next destination, “packing” appropriate things to wear,
making tickets for our flight and of course there will be a
building project involved.
Shared
Reading
We finished our
author study of Jan Brett this week.
We read many of her Christmas books before the break.
This week, we read several other books written by her.
The children have learned to use her illustrations to
help them predict the events in her stories. They also noticed
that her name (Jan) is hidden in other words that they know.
The children found the word Jan in Janna’s name and in
the word January. They discovered that you could use these “chunks” of
words to help them read other words.
They are really becoming critical word detectives!
