Sanders’
Scribbles

We had a very
exciting event happen in our classroom.
The caterpillars that Sarah shared with us became
butterflies. The
children were so excited to watch them hatch out of the
chrysalises.
Centers
Having Miss Pettey in
the classroom means that center time is very busy.
While I worked with small groups on our USA fact books,
Miss Pettey helped the children research New York City.
Some of the children even found time to make and test some
paper airplanes at science center.
Shared
Reading
This week, we read
books by the author Ezra Jack Keates.
While reading his books, we noticed that each book’s
setting is a big city! The
children also noticed that he uses the same characters in each of
his stories and torn pieces of paper in his illustrations.
With his books, we looked at elements of a story
(especially the setting), punctuation, and short vowel words.
Math
The children finished
making AABB patterns on their January calendars.
Once these were finished, we put the calendars in their
math journals.
Theme
This week for theme,
we started our discussion on New York State.
We compared the country and city aspects of this state and
created a Venn Diagram to show the relationship.
After doing this, the children voted and chose to learn
more about New York’s big cities. After making this choice, they began their research on city
life.
