Media Events

Every day is an 'event' in media!  Our goal is to instill a love of reading and books in our kindergarten students.  As educators at AEEC, we are in the fortunate position of having students during their first school experience in our system. We take the notion that "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" very seriously.  We want our students' first school experience to provide a lifetime of good memories about books, reading, and school that will stay with them long after they leave us for elementary school.

Upcoming Events:

Count on Reading:  Join your child in a reading adventure!  Now is the time to build the reading habit!  Students are encouraged to read 100 books at home (with a family member) during the year.  A yellow reading "log" is sent home in September.  Once the card is filled with 100 book titles, it is turned in to the media center.  The reader receives special recognition during their class media time, and receives a blue ribbon.

Read Across America:  A national event sponsored by the National Education Association.  We will have guest readers in each classroom on Friday, February 27, 2009, and celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday (March 1) in media classes the prior week.

Dr. Jenkins, our superintendent, participates in Read Across America Day at AEEC.

Mayor of Auburn Bill Ham reads to a class on Read Across America Day at AEEC.

All AEEC students visit the media center once a week as a class to hear a story and check out a library book.  Small group activities are also provided for a variety of activities.  Below are some things to do in our media center:

  •  use SMARTBoard (interactive whiteboard) for research, author studies, and phonological awareness activities
  •  participate with puppets in storytelling
  •  learn about authors, illustrators, and awards
  •  learn basic library skills
  •  check out a library book
  •  browse the collection
  •  participate in educational computer activities
  •  hear a story at the listening center
  •  use puzzles, puppets, magnets, art and other developmentally-appropriate activities for kindergarten students based on literature
  • educational computer games
  • Small group research planned collaboratively with the classroom teacher

Scholastic Book Fairs

Book Fairs provide a wonderful opportunity to study authors and illustrators, and be exposed to new books.  Our two Scholastic Book Fairs for 2008-09 are October 6-10, 2008 and  February 2-6, 2009.  Because of our PTA support and planning, AEEC always has great success with our Book Fairs!
