Project Work

Project work is a crucial part of our thematic curriculum.  Our theme this year is the United States.  We began our year by drawing from what was familiar to the children.  After studying about our town, we began to branch out and research other areas of the United States.  Our class chose to travel to Washington D.C.  Once we have chosen and researched a particular subject, we decide the best way to share the information we are learning with others.  One of the ways we do this is through project work.  The children construct replicas of what they are learning about.  During this construction, the children are experiencing and building on every subject area.  We hope you enjoy our tour of the United States!

Constructing Samford Hall

One of the first construction projects we did this year was Samford Hall.  Samford is a historical on campus at Auburn University.  The children are familiar with it because it is right downtown. 

Our biggest challenge in creating Samford Hall was building the roof of the tower.  We found that it is a true pyramid.  It has acute isosceles triangles on all four sides!

We decided to make a small model of what we wanted our roof to look like.  We learned that a protractor measures angles.

We found out that our triangles had to be acute triangles that were the same size in order for them to go together to make the roof.  We used cardboard from a box to make our triangles.

Once we completed our roof, we put our tower together and began painting!

Everyone in our class had an opportunity to work on some part of our Samford Hall and Toomer's Corner construction.

Once we completed our project, we made a project book page to record what we learned.  Each child completed his/her own project page using artwork and facts about Samford Hall.
