Polar Bears

We have learned SO many amazing facts about polar bears!  We hope you learn something too!

We weighed ourselves in the Science Lab to complete this question...

We gathered resources from AEEC teachers, the AEEC library, and the Auburn Public Library.  These friends e-mailed Ms. Eve, our contact at the APL...

"Can we brow sum poiar bears bocs?"

(Can we borrow some polar bear books?)

For our latest gallery display, we made an adult-sized flat polar bear.  We did this to figure out the question, "Are you taller than a polar bear?"  Each griend was measured next to the polar bear who is four feet tall.  We learned that adult polar bears are four feet tall, when standing on four feet.  The children even decided that everyone had to measured with their shoes off, to be accurate!  We marked each friend's height with a sticky note.  We also wrote facts to display in the gallery.  Be sure to check all of this out next time you visit AEEC!

Building the polar bear...

First we decided what kind of polar bear to build...

Then we made a plan based on what we had already done and what we needed to do....

Next, everyone decided what they wanted to do to help...

The Framing Crew chose to use black paper, because we learned that polar bears have black skin.
The Stuffing Crew worked hard to make sure our polar bear was very fat, because we learned how important blubber (fat) is in keeping a polar bear warm.
The Framing Crew returned to add the fur.  They first gathered a variety of white material from our drawers and closet to decide what would most feel like polar bear fur.  They decided on gauze.  They also worked hard to include a lot of blubber to ensure our polar bear cub would not be cold.
Next, the Painting Crew met to add the details.
The Habitat Crew gathered to design and make a den with plenty of snow.  When they were done it looked like it had snowed in our room and on our friends!
Afterwards, we went to the pod to find the perfect spot for our polar bear cub to live.  The Green Pod currently has penguins and a sea lion living in it.  The children decided our polar bear could not live by the penguins, seeing how penguins live in the South Pole and polar bears live in the North Pole.  Also, we had to avoid the sea lion, so no one got eaten!  Such scientific and creative thinkers we have!
We also made more snow and signs to accompany our polar bear.  Be sure to stop by and meet our polar bear cub sometime soon!
