How
Do We Learn?
During
the course of the year, we will integrate skills though themes of study.
We will begin our thematic study of the zoo shortly after school begins
and continue it until winter break. The
theme will allow for the development of reading, writing, math, science, and
social studies skills.
Reading
will be developed through shared reading, guided reading, and independent
reading. The children will work at
an individual pace.
Math
skills will be developed primarily through the use of math games, manipulative,
and problem solving activities. These
methods help students to develop logical thinking skills and problem solving
abilities at an individual pace.
Writing
and spelling will be developed through the writing process and shared journals.
Both of these processes allow the children to develop many types of
writing and spelling skills, in addition to speech, storytelling, math, and art
skills.
Science
and social studies are primarily developed through our themes of study.
It is through this format we learn general and specific information about
the theme. Based on the theme, the
children will be choosing projects, researching topics, and promoting many
important skills.
The
children will be assessed by checklists, teacher observations, anecdotal
records, running records, and conferences.
There will be two scheduled opportunities for conferences during the
year. If you feel that you need a
conference at any time during the year, please contact me to schedule one.
I will do the same.
