AJHS Jazz Band
The AJHS Jazz Band was started in 2003. It is comprised of a select group of approximately 25 musicians. The make-up of the group is standard big band instrumentation of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitar, bass, guitar, piano, and percussion. Membership in the group is by audition only. The group meets at 7:00 am daily during the school's zero period.
During its short history, the ensemble has enjoyed a fair amount of success. The jazz band performs at the annual Fall and Spring Supper Concerts, the AHS-AJHS Night of Jazz, during lunch for the students of AJHS and Drake Middle School, and for its Finale Concert each spring. The group is called upon regularly to perform for community events such as the City of Auburn Earth Day Celebration and Alabama Council on Human Relations Banquet and in local churches and retirement homes.
The group has been rated superior each year at Alabama Bandmasters Association Solo and Ensemble Competition and at its performance at the Grissom Jazz Festival in 2004. The group has also been rated superior in competition on its annual spring trip at the All-Star Music Festival in Orlando, Florida, and at the Music in the Parks Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia, winning first prize in the jazz category at both these events.
Auditions are held each spring. Interested students should work to achieve a high level of skill on their instrument. For more information, please contact Mr. Cornelius.
