The Sudler Flag of Honor is given annually by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to the top high school band program in the United States, Canada, and Japan. The award requires that a band have played high-quality and challenging music over a period of eight years, as well as pushing to be evaluated by qualified judges at state, regional, national, and international levels in concert activities. The band must provide a complete and balanced musical slate, including marching, solo, and concert opportunities for students. The band should also perform at professional meetings of significance at all levels. Finally, a band must have many students involved in district, all-state, national, and international honor bands. In the 21 years of the award's existence, only 49 bands have been recognized for this honor. The Auburn High School Band received this most prestigious of band awards in 1987--the 19th band in the world to be awarded this distinction. Bands Awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor
