Auburn High School Band Alumni Profiles:
Frances Lapp Averitt

Frances Lapp Averitt was a member of the Auburn High School Band from 1956-1960, and is currently the principal flute and soloist for the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and is the professor of flute performance at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. While at Auburn High, she qualified for a spot in the Alabama Bandmasters All-State Red Band four consecutive years, sitting first chair Red Band her sophomore, junior, and senior years.

After graduating from Auburn High, Averitt attended Florida State University, where she recieved her BS, followed by a M.Ed at Auburn University. She returned to Florida State to study under the great flautists Albert Tipton and Marcel Moyse, where she earned her Doctor of Musical Arts. Averitt's former positions include principal flute and soloist for the Fairfax Symphony, Meridian Symphony, and Columbus Symphony Orchestras, and second flute and piccolo for the Birmingham Symphony. She has performed at National Flute Association conventions in Washington, Kansas City, Orlando, and Phoenix, has performed in Moscow and Leningrad as a member of the NFA delegation to the USSR, and has performed in the Kennedy Center and the National Gallery of Art, as well as having toured Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland and Trinidad with various faculty chamber ensembles. Her performances also include summer music festivals including Aspen, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival, Blanche Moyse's Bach and Chamber Music Seminars, the Stephen Preston Baroque Seminar, the Rome Festival Orchestra, Haydn Performance Seminar (Austria), the Academia Musicale Chigiana (Siena, Italy) and the Yale at Norfolk, Connecticut. She is also one of the world's foremost authorities on difference tones and whistle tones.

At the 1960 Spring Supper Concert, the Auburn High School Band performed the Cadenza from W. A. Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1, featuring Averitt (then Frances Lapp) on flute. Click on the following link to hear her, and the Auburn High School Band's, performance.
