Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to Pre-AP/IB English 10! We (Mrs. Mock, Mrs. Robinson, and Mr. Tindell) are all looking forward to a fun year exploring some of the classics of World Literature. Before you begin this exciting journey with us, you will need to complete a summer reading assignment. Oh now…don’t sigh! We’ve chosen one of our FAVORITE works—A Separate Peace by John Knowles. It’s a coming-of-age novel about two friends who attend an all-boy prep school around the time of World War II. If you like the movie Dead Poet’s Society, you’ll like this book. Really, it’s an easy and enjoyable read.
We have attached some handy resources for you to reference while reading—a vocabulary list and study guide questions. Completion of the study questions is optional. You may choose not to do them. However, if you make the extra effort to complete them, you will receive 50 extra points to factor into your first semester grade and you will be well-prepared for the Reading Check test you will take on the first day of class. Yes…the FIRST day of class! The test will be worth 75 points. If you read the novel and complete the study guide questions, you will be well prepared. Simply reading Spark Notes, E-Notes, or any other type of Cliff Notes WILL NOT help you.
So…while packing your things to take to the beach or the pool this summer, don’t forget to take along your copy of A Separate Peace. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
