Reading is my life!

Summer Reading List

I am a reading specialist, and I love to read--fiction, nonfiction, hardback, paperback, or e-books online--everything!
For the 2008-2009 school year, I am teaching a "Grad Exam Prep Reading" course at Auburn High School.
The reading course is designed to help students improve reading strategies across the curriculum,
in addition to preparing them for the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.
A major goal for this course is preparing students for reading beyond high school.

The reading class is not a lecture course; it is a student-centered skills course.  On a typical day, several strategies will be
explained briefly in class, and students will spend much of the class time practicing those. The skills learned
in this class will make students better readers, writers, thinkers, and learners--
significantly increasing chances for success in school and in life.
Regardless of current reading level, one of the best ways to improve reading skills is to read more!
I believe this completely, which is why every student in my class will be expected to read 20-30 minutes per day.
Just as in sports, music, or video games, practice improves performance!

"America is no longer an industrial society where many people work on farms or in factories.
Instead, most jobs now involve providing services or processing information. More than ever, communication
skills are the tools of our trade. This course will be concerned directly with helping you learn and strengthen
the communication skills that will be vital for job success in the 21st Century."
(John Langan, Ten Steps to Building College Reading Skills)
