Extra Credit Opportunities

 

You can earn up to a maximum of 20 bonus points per semester by doing any of the following assignments:

 

v      Attend a professional, university, or a school theatre performance.  Write a critique (no shorter than one page) explaining ONE of the major themes evident in the work.  You must choose to focus your paper on ONE of the following:

§         explain how the director’s choices in scenery, costuming, and blocking reflect one of the major themes

§         explain how the actions of the main characters reflects the major theme

Your critique must have an introduction paragraph with thesis statement, two to three support paragraphs explaining and/or providing examples and details from the play, and a conclusion paragraph.  You must attach the ticket stub and/or playbill from the performance to your submission. (20 points)

 

v      Attend a Theatre AHS CenterStage production and write a critique (no shorter than one page) explaining the following:

§         a brief synopsis of the play

§         constructive criticism regarding the scenic elements, costuming, and acting (tell what you liked, did not like, what worked well, what did not work well)

Be sure to support your opinions with thorough explanations.  You must attach the ticket stub and/or playbill to your submission. (20 points)

 

 

v      Design a poster (22 x 28) based on a novel or play we are currently studying. The poster must focus on ONE of the main themes from the work. You must fill all of the poster space with color, and you must incorporate a significant passage from the work into your design.  Be sure that the passage relates significantly to the theme you are focusing on.  All work should be visually appealing and should reflect your BEST EFFORT.  (A variety of media may be used to create your poster.)  You will also be required to explain your work to the class.  (20 points)

 

 

v      Design and assemble a complete bulletin board for our classroom related to a novel or play we are currently studying.  The bulletin board must focus on a main theme from the work and must include at least one significant passage from the work.  Your board must be visually appealing, reflective of your BEST EFFORT, and large enough to be seen by everyone in the class.  (Suggestion:  An interactive bulletin board would be “Da Bomb”!)  You will also be required to explain the board to the class.  You may work on this with a partner. (20 points)

 

 

v      Create an original work (sculpture, sketch, painting, model, video, etc.) related to a novel or play we are currently studying. You must also incorporate a significant passage or passages from the novel or play.  All work should be visually appealing and should reflect your BEST EFFORT.  You will also be required to explain your work to the class.  (20 points)

 

 

v      Read a novel from the Reading Counts list in the Media Center.  You must take notes during your reading to be used as a reference when writing a review of the book.  In your review, you must:

§         discuss how the characters and setting of the novel help develop one of the major themes found in the work

§         use detailed examples and/or quotations from the novel to support your ideas

§         provide your overall opinion about the novel; be specific and EXPLAIN WHY you feel the way you do (20 points)
