Lord of the Flies Discussion Questions—Chapters 5-8

   
1. In chapter 5 the major characters all express their fear of the unknown.  Find a quote within chapter 5 from each of the following characters in which they attempt to communicate their fears to others: Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and Simon.  Based on the quote you find, what, if anything does it seem that each boy is afraid of the most?
   
2. In chapter 5 what is the paradox of the boys’ attitude toward the beast? (paradox= contradiction)
   
3. In chapter 6 what is the irony of the dead parachutist landing on the island?
   
4. What is significant about Ralph’s feelings when he wounds the boar?
   
5. How has the power begun to shift in these chapters?
   
6. In chapter 8 the killing of the sow is considered a turning point in the novel and is described in great detail.  Why is it considered a turning point?
   
7. In chapter 8 Simon has a “conversation” with the Lord of the Flies.  How does the conversation mirror Simon’s statement about fear in chapter 5?
   
8. What are two (2) examples of “civility” in these chapters?  What are two (2) examples of savagery in these chapters?
