Student Press Law Center.
The SPLC is dedicated to providing certain constitutional rights for scholastic
journalists. They help us out of we get in trouble, but more importantly,
they keep us informed before we get in trouble. There's lots of
good info here about the Hazelwood case.
The AHS Journalism Hall of Fame!
Follow the careers of former AHS journalists!
Stefania Marghitu: After graduating in 2006, "Blinky" went right to work and immediately became an opinion columnist for the Indiana Daily Student at Indiana University! Kathleen Buccleugh: Can you believe she's a copy editor? Now writing for the Crimson White instead of singing all the time, Kathleen seems to be adjusting well to life at that other big school in Alabama. She wrote a music review for a band called the "Flaming Lips." The fact that I know nothing about that band proves that she's hip and young and I'm old and senile. She recently auditioned for "American Idol" and wrote an incredible article about it. She's also helping with layout of the Crimson White, and she's design and copy editor for the yearbook, the Corolla. Ben Dake: My favorite sportswriter of all time is now working for the Crimson White. He seems to be covering the University of Alabama Women's Gymnastics team quite a bit. Way to go, Ben! Sally Tidwell: Former editor (and four-year staff member) of the AHS Free Press, Sally is now head feature writer at the Corner News. While getting her degree in mass communication at Auburn University, she kicked, fought, and bit her way through the Auburn Plainsman staff, eventually becoming managing editor. For purposes of meeting women, she used to be my little sister. Oh, and she's a David Sedaris fun, further proof that I'm really related to her in some way. Kristin Lenz: Krisitn is my most-traveled former student! She just left the Orange County Register for a sweet gig at the Hartford Courant. A few years ago she gave me a mild heart attack when she announced she might be running for editor-in-chief of the Auburn Plainsman; luckily, she decided to stay out of the limelight and work as copy editor. Then, she was copy editor of the Tuscaloosa News, and now she's at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Sarasota, Florida. Erica Newland: Erica is now a reporter working for the Yale Herald. This is my first student to write for a newspaper in the Ivy League! Steven Rummer: Steven
is now working at the Chattanooga
Pulse, a newsweekly out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He writes
feature stories and compiles the weekly calendar. His sister Caitlyn, by
the way, is currently an editor-in-training of the Free Press. Jason McGee: Jason's still in Auburn. He was featured in a story in the Corner News about how he makes custom bikes. Theresa Stoll: "Treesa" sold me a few major appliances, and the rumor is she's soon to be a homeowner! Abby and Gabbie: America's favorite twins are living in Atlanta. You know that really cool vintage clothing shop in Little Five Points? That's where Abby works! Gabbie is in a weird offshoot of video documentaries. Beth Williams: Not a Free Press journalist (think of her as an adopted daughter), she's now teaching Latin. Latin! Et tu, Beth? Sam Gross: Sam's a lawyer in Chicago! Matt Blanks: Making pottery in Athens?? Matt, send me an ashtray! Jessica Smith: After working at the United States Printing Office, Jessica returned to Auburn to pursue her masters degree. She's going to be an English teacher! Andrea Trunzo: She's alive! Andrea is working on a research project UAB that is far too complicated for me to explain. She drifted off the path of journalism (tsk, tsk) and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Psychology and a minor in English. (Hey, at least her minor was on the right track!) Spaz: What ever happened to Spaz? Last we heard from him he was making lots of money working on layout for the Auburn Plainsman. Now we hear that he's married and owns a recording studio in Opelika. He was the first student (under my sponsorship, at least) to have a column in the AHS Free Press. Ailicia Ruscin: Ailecia is pursuing her Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Before that, she was editing an underground "zine" in Pittsburgh. True to her nature, the articles were well written, although a bit bizarre. As co-editor for the AHS Free Press, she always kept me on my toes as we pushed the limits of the 1st amendment to the extreme! Luke Alexander: I lost contact with Luke, but the last I heard he was spinning records over at WEGL at Auburn University. Has he perhaps left town to pursue a career in radio with the Howard Stern show???
