Dear Potential Scholars Bowl
Team Member (and Parent/Guardian):
Welcome! The 2008-2009 Auburn High School
Scholars Bowl team has two major events this year. They are the Knowledge
Masters Open (KMO) Tournaments. KMO are computerized academic competitions in
which a team of students works to answer 100-200 questions within a limited time
period. KMO competition questions are multiple-choice and cover all
subject areas in 15 categories. The questions involve higher level thinking
skills in analysis and application as well as knowledge and comprehension.
Students work as a team during competitions, discussing what their responses
will be. The results of the contest are tabulated into overall, state and
enrollment-size rankings. Last year AHS ranked 7th (out of 20) in the
state, and 244th (of 703) in the world; see http://www.greatauk.com/kmoh.pdf
for more details.
KMO was designed to stimulate enthusiasm for
learning and recognition for academic accomplishment. The contest runs on a
classroom computer to allow all students the opportunity to compete in a large
academic event without the expense of traveling to a central site. This is
especially important to us because of increased gas prices and the
school-systems inability to fund many field trip- type activities. Traveling
with a dozen or so Scholars Bowl team members to academic competitions is highly
cost-prohibitive.
The dates for the KMO
tournaments are December 3, 2008 and April 22, 2009. The Scholars Bowl team will
be competing after the school day each of those particular Wednesdays.
