SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

The Superintendent or designee shall conduct an orientation program for substitute teachers and prepare a list of those qualified and approved. Principals or their designated representatives shall call substitute teachers from the approved list in case of absence of a regular teacher.  It shall be the responsibility of the principal and the regular teacher to insure that the substitute teacher has the necessary instructions and materials to teach effectively, including textbooks, lesson plans, class rolls, schedules and an outline of local school procedures.  The substitute teacher shall provide the regular teacher with a brief report of the day’s activities.  Substitute teachers shall be paid at the rate set by the Board.

A person substituting as an extended substitute, as defined by the Personnel Department, will be paid based on his/her level of certification with zero years of experience. 

All applicants for an Alabama Substitute Teacher’s License shall be fingerprinted and required to submit to a background clearance conducted by the appropriate law enforcement agency as required by Alabama Code.

When a Substitute Teacher’s License has been issued after July 1, 1997, and is allowed to lapse for more than 90 days and no other valid certificate is held, an additional background clearance shall be required for the issuance of another license.

The Superintendent is charged with the responsibility for carrying out the intent of this policy
