SCHOOL BOARD LEGAL STATUS

 

The Auburn City Board of Education shall be composed of five members appointed by the City Council who shall be residents of the city and who shall not be members of the City Council or Commission. The members shall be chosen solely because of their character and fitness. Furthermore, no member shall be appointed to this Board who is subject to the authority of the Board. Members of the Board shall serve without compensation.

Legal Status

Powers of the Board are delegated to it as a body: therefore, no authority is granted to members as individuals. The Board, as a body, has the authority to act as a free and independent agency of the City of Auburn. The Board is vested with all the powers necessary or proper for the administration and management of the free public schools within the city and adjacent territory which has been annexed as a part of the school district.

Term of Office

The terms of office are five (5) years, with term of one (1) member expiring annually. Members shall assume office at the next regular meeting of the Board in June following their appointment. A member shall serve on the Board until his/her successor assumes office.

In the event a vacancy occurs in the membership of the Board the fact shall be reported to the Auburn City Council by said Board, and the City Council shall appoint a person to fill such vacancy for the un-expired term.
