Conditioning:
Show up for Voluntary Conditioning even though it is “voluntary”. Show up in decent shape. A couple of weeks of conditioning will NOT have you ready to play – you’ve got to work on your own. Fall Evaluations are the first phase of tryouts. Be prepared to play soccer the entire week. Other than this week, we are not allowed to train with a soccer ball until Jan 19th. Conditioning is as follows: Mondays and Wednesdays are base (longer runs at constant pace; hill work) and interval (medium distance with timed pace changes throughout the run) training days. Tuesdays and Thursdays are plyometric (jump training), speed, and core training. Fridays are “game days” – always crazy, always fun, different ways to make you run. J
Mandatory conditioning is just what it says: mandatory. Don’t miss.
Between now and conditioning/tryouts you should do several things:
1) Play as much soccer as possible – if you’re not playing with a club team this fall, you’ve GOT to find some time to touch the ball.
2) Watch as much soccer as possible. Go to AU games. Watch it on TV.
3) Get/Stay in shape. Fitness matters…not as much as being skilled with a ball…but it does matter.
