Freshman Facts

Even though the 9th graders in ACS are housed at AJHS, they officially become HIGH SCHOOLERS on the first day of school!  This is due to the fact that as 9th graders students begin earning HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS for every class they take and PASS.  Below are some IMPORTANT FACTS for 9th graders AND their parents.

  • Students must successfully complete all sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) in order to graduate.  Subject area tests include English, Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies.

  • Students must earn 28 credits to graduate.

4 credits of Math (Must include Algebra I or Algebra IA and Algebra IB and Geometry)

5 credits of English (2 - 9th grade year, 1 – 10th, 11th, 12th)

4 credits of Social Studies/History

4 credits of Science

1 credit of PE

½ credit of Health

1 credit of Business Essentials (Students earn 1/2 credit for Business Essentials if taken in 8th grade, and this fulfills the requirement as well.)

½ credit of a Fine Art

8 credits of free electives

  • Students take 8 credits per year, with the option to take less during Senior year.

  • Students earn credit for each class they take and pass.

  • Students earn the following credits their 9th grade year:

English 9 or English 9 PreIB/AP = 2 credits (1 per semester).

World History = 1 credit (1/2 per 9 weeks).

Biology = 1 credit

Math  - 9th graders take 1 or 2 of the following:

Algebra 1A = 1 credit

Algebra 1B = 1 credit

Geometry = 1 credit

Algebra II = 1 credit

Electives = 2 credits

TOTAL = 8 credits

  • 9th grade students must earn 4 credits, 3 of which must be in core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) in order to move to Auburn High School for 10th grade.

  • Beginning with 9th grade, all classes count towards GPA (Grade Point Average).

  • GPA is a very big factor in admittance into college.
