What is writing workshop?
- Description
- Three days each week, students in our writing workshops spend one
hour of class time doing the things that writers do: We pre-write,
draft, confer, re-draft, edit, share, and publish our writing. This is
in-class time set aside to remind students that writing is a critical
component in education.
- Due dates
- Students turn in the writing they finish in workshop as they finish their
individual compositions. I insist that students turn in at least one
piece of writing every two weeks. Students must complete a total of
four compositions each quarter: two assigned pieces and two
self-selected pieces.
- Grading rubric
- Each piece of writing is graded based on its content, clarity, and
mechanical precision.
- Portfolios
- At the end of each semester, students will produce a portfolio in which
they present their best four compositions from that semester.
