How do you do these things in here?
Come knowing what you are going to write about.
Conferencing will be with yourself and also with others.
Let Mrs. White know when you’re ready for a peer conference.
Conferences lead to revisions – a chance to improve the content of your piece. When they no longer do that, and you are satisfied with content, move on to self-editing.
When done with your self-editing, place your piece in your class folder marked Teacher Edit.
I will schedule an editing conference with you. Then you can write your final copy.
Final copies go in your class folder marked “To Be Graded.” They should have stapled behind them all earlier drafts, notes, etc. in reverse chronological order. (In other words, final copy will be on top and prewriting on the bottom).
Going public involves grading, but can also include group share or publishing in a variety of formats.
General Grading: Process x 4 / Content x 3 / Mechanics x 1
Other things to keep in mind:
1. Save everything. Do not erase or delete.
2. Write only on one side of the paper when using lined paper.
3. Double-space or skip lines to build in revision space.
4. Date and label everything.
5. Do not talk during workshop time except in a quiet voices when conferencing.
6. Work really hard and never say – “I’m finished!” Until May, there’s always the next piece.
Friendly Advice:
Pace yourself. Try to move through a piece every two to three weeks. You will be responsible for three graded pieces every nine weeks, but can turn in more or work for improvement.
Ask me questions. Let me know what you’re ready to learn next or what’s got you stuck. This will help me plan mini-lessons that help you!
Try different types of writing. Don’t stick only to what you’ve tried before. Be adventurous! Take risks!
